Trump’s Presidency (Part One)

It is very telling what kinds of cuts President Trump is planning on making to government spending.  Depending on your philosophy, cuts may or may not be a good thing.  According to macroeconomics, the government is supposed to increase spending during periods of recession and then decrease spending during periods of profitability.  So to a certain extent it depends on what time period you’re in.

But I understand that cutting spending is also a philosophical thing, I get that.  Some people believe in spending on domestic programs, some don’t.  I’m willing to pay higher taxes for spending on domestic programs, despite growing up poor, but some people aren’t.  In theory, I have no problem with that.

But the things Donald Trump is planning to cut?  Support for the arts, the arts encouraging critical and independent thought and education and sometimes taking a political stand against the government.  Spending on programs for women who have experienced violence.

Some of the stuff he’s planning to cut is really nasty.  Especially given the fact that we spend like fifteen times more on our military than any other country in the entire world.  We could cut spending on the military and still be the world’s most heightened military power.

And yeah, I know, I know, China.  If you follow China’s modernization closely, and study it extensively as I have, you’ll find they’re about to take a Very.  Big.  Hit.

He’s also planning on pulling us from the UN, and he’s just abandoned the Trans Pacific Partnership trade deal.  That sounds like a return to isolationism in theory.  In actuality, in a global society it is impossible to return to isolationism.  All that move would do is leave us without allies.

Additionally, he’s going to go ahead with building the Dakota Access Pipeline, stripping all Native Americans in the surrounding area of the right to decide what goes on around their land.

As far as the ACA executive order goes… he’s caused chaos in the health insurance industry and put all the pressure on Congress for his own reputation, over a bill that is not inherently evil in the first place and actually helps some vulnerable people.

This presidency is already such a mess and it’s only been a few days.

Then there’s this: “In one of his first acts as president, Donald Trump has reinstated a federal ban on U.S. funding for international health organizations that counsel women on family planning options that include abortion.”

Let the decrease in women’s reproductive health, loss of contraceptive services, and botched abortions begin.  That’s all it will get us – dead women along with lost children.

I’m Tweeting a whole hell of a lot, and it feels useless.  I can Tweet and sign petitions till the cows come home, and even write blog posts, but I still feel like I’m not doing enough.  I don’t have my own money; I’m living off of my parents’ charity while in college and they’re conservatives.

Can you say “voting in midterms”?
